Chinese parishioners at Our Lady of Perpetual Help recently brought their youth together for a meeting called "Yeashow," a word that reflects the Cantonese name for Jesus, "Yea Sol." The event reached out to non-Catholic Chinese in the neighborhood and provided a forum for Chinese youth and adults to share how they became Catholic. This wonderful experience has its history beginning in 1995 when...

Cultural bonds with our Asian neighbors

..An emerging Chinese neighborhood in Brooklyn lacked local Catholic ministers proficient in their native language had to travel to Manhattan for liturgy or faith community. It was a small but momentous beginning when Redemptorist Father Norman Bennett, C.Ss.R., responded to their need by studying Chinese and meeting with three local Chinese families.

Over time, Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish in Brooklyn began to offer liturgies, faith formation, RCIA, and marriage preparation in Chinese to some 300 Catholic Chinese families living in the boundaries of the parish. The parishioners today, find many opportunities to celebrate their Chinese heritage and to evangelize within their community.

Seventy-seven Chinese children are attending the parish elementary school this year. "Saturday Cultural School" teaches the children to read and write in Chinese. Parents appreciate these lessons because public schools do not offer Chinese, and they want to pass their culture on to their children. Many of these parents are not Catholic, but they enroll their children because of their great respect for Catholic education.

Tri-lingual retreat

An upcoming tri-lingual retreat will celebrate a weekend of community in English, Spanish, and Chinese. In the spirit of the Redemptorist founder, St. Alphonsus, it will reach out to those whose needs would otherwise be left unmet for want of someone able to speak the Gospel in the language that they know and that truly touches their personal lives.
