In support of their dedication to the well being of the poor and underprivileged, the Redemptorist Fathers and Brothers of the Baltimore Province created a Justice and Peace Secretariat office within their province. This office is headed up by Father Frank Gargani, C.Ss.R., Secretary for Peace and Justice. Father Gargani devotes his full time ministry to bringing forth to the Redemptorist community those programs and grass root projects that can enrich and support the betterment of the lives of the poor within the Baltimore Province. As means permit, the provincial council agrees to provide grants in support of these worthy efforts.

From the time of their founder, the Redemptorists have always understood that our society must be directed in its policies by a preferential love for the poor, which measures its moral success by how it provides for the most disadvantaged. Thus they strive to create a more just society, one that respects human dignity in all of its members and provides them with opportunities to succeed. They strive to bring justice on a local level, always in close relationship with the poor of the communities in which they live. In all their efforts, they encourage peace by fostering justice and encouraging the public to act more justly in their communities. At parishes and universities, they initiate reflections which ask local groups how they are caring for the handicapped in their community, or for the unemployed, those on welfare, and those who need job training or housing. They discuss issues like racism, immigration, and advocacy with national organizations.

There are over twenty projects funded in any given year to assure the self sufficiency of their poorer neighbors. This funding supports various parish projects, outreach programs, daily meals for the hungry, job training, health insurance for the uninsured and support to immigrant workers to name but a few.

Last year, The Redemptorists in conjunction with the Saint Vincent DePaul Society in Baltimore, Maryland, supplied 20 homeless people with transitional apartments while they found jobs and affordable housing. The temporary living space helped these people while they were seeking employment by providing them with a home base to prepare for their interview experiences. Funding was also made available to support youth related sports and academic programs in the inner city.

The spirit of Saint Alphonsus lives on every day in every way in the life and works of the Redemptorist family both in those who serve and those they serve.
