Brother John Bosco Hammond, C.Ss.R., died on May 25, 2019, at age 78. He had been a member of the St. Clement’s Mission House Community in Ephrata, Pa., since June 2015.
Rollin William Edward Hammond was born on October 5, 1940, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Lester and Lucy (Cosgrove).
He was baptized at St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo and confirmed at St. Stephen’s in Toledo. He professed first vows on August 2, 1960, in Ilchester, Md., and took the name John Bosco.
His solemn vows as a professed brother in the Congregation were made on August 2, 1965, at Ilchester. He made his novitiate in Ilchester (1959-1960) and remained there until 1964.
His first assignment was to Holy Redeemer College in Washington, D.C. (1964-1965), followed by Ilchester (second novitiate, 1965). He served at St. Alphonsus College in Suffield, Conn. (1965-1967); Mount St. Alphonsus in Esopus, N.Y. (1967-1969); St. Clement’s Mission House in Ephrata (1969-1981); St. Mary’s College in North East, Pa. (1981-1985); and at parishes, including St. Michael the Archangel in Baltimore.
Brother Bosco was a volunteer fireman during his time in Ephrata from 1969-1981 and also ran the food bank.
His funeral Mass was held Monday, June 3, at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Ephrata and was buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery at St. Clement’s Mission House.
