Father Dennis Maurice Foley, C.Ss.R., of the San Alfonso Retreat House community, West End, New Jersey, died on June 6, 2021, at age 87 and five months. Born in Brooklyn, New York, January 16, 1934, he was the son of John and Mary (Glynn) Foley. He was baptized (January 28, 1934) and confirmed (November 11, 1945) at the Redemptorists’ parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Brooklyn. He professed first vows on August 2, 1956, at St. Mary’s in Ilchester, Maryland, and final vows, September 2, 1959, at Mt. St. Alphonsus, Esopus, New York, where he was ordained on June 18, 1961. He completed the tirocinium at St. Mary’s, Annapolis, Maryland, between 1962 and 1963. All of his priestly assignments were to the Baltimore Province. His first assignment was to St. Philomena’s, Pittsburgh (1963-1970); St. Alphonsus College, Suffield, CT (Missionary, 1970-1972); Notre Dame Retreat House, Canandaigua, NY (1972-1978); Our Lady of Lourdes, Seaford, DE (Rector, 1978-1984); St. Gregory, North East, PA (Rector, 1984-1990); St. Mary’s, Annapolis (1990-1993); Sacred Heart of Jesus, Baltimore, MD (Rector, 1993-1996); San Alfonso Retreat House, West End, NJ (1996-2021).
While serving the home missions between 1970 and 1972, he also studied for a master’s degree in counseling and education at St. John’s University in New York.
All services will be at San Alfonso Retreat House, 755 Ocean Ave Long Branch, N.J. on Saturday June 12, 2021 in the Retreat House Chapel.
Visitation: 9:30-11:15 a.m.
Liturgy of the Resurrection: 11:15 a.m., immediately following the Visitation.
Burial will be later, at a date not yet determined, in Resurrection Cemetery Staten Island, N.Y.
