March 21, 2019Joseph’s brothers sell him into captivity.

Blood drained from the young soldier’s savage wound, and his last breath was a cry for his mother. Recruited months earlier, he went off to war, not looking back. Considered a bad kid, he drank, cheated at cards, abused himself and others. He was left an unmourned corpse in cold mud . . . but the Father was there.
So many over the ages have died on battlefields, in back alleys, and in beds, not knowing the Father was there. From eternity he had loved them and carefully, wonderfully knit them together in a mother’s womb. In death he treats them justly.
Dying, Joseph would have remembered the cistern in today’s first reading from Genesis. Sold as a slave by his brothers for 20 silver pieces, he knew God was with him then and that by grace others would come to understand.
Faith is the grace to know the Father. He guides with divine providence and knows all our tomorrows. He is in the cisterns with his sons and daughters, nurturing growth and wholeness.
With gratitude and seriousness, meditate on this.

La sangre manaba de la salvaje herida en el joven soldado, y su último aliento fue un llanto por su madre. Reclutado meses antes, se marchó sin mirar atrás. Considerado un chico malo, bebía, hacía trampas en las cartas y abusaba de sí mismo y de los demás. Nadie se lamentó por él, y su cuerpo quedó abandonado en el barro frío . . . pero el Padre estaba allí.
A lo largo de los siglos, muchas personas han muerto en los campos de batalla, en los callejones y en las camas, sin saber que el Padre estaba allí. Desde la eternidad los ha amado y, de manera cuidadosa y maravillosa, los ha unido en el vientre materno. Y en la muerte los ha tratado justamente.
Al morir, José habría recordado el aljibe en la primera lectura de hoy del Génesis. Vendido como esclavo por sus hermanos a cambio de 20 piezas de plata, sabía que Dios estaba con él y que, por su gracia, los demás lo llegarían a entender.
La fe es la gracia de conocer al Padre. Él nos guía con providencia divina y conoce todos nuestros mañanas.
Él está en las cisternas con sus hijos e hijas, alimentando el crecimiento y la integridad.
Con gratitud y seriedad, meditemos sobre esto.
