Lent, day 2: Thursday after Ash Wednesday

Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Psalm 1; Luke 9:22-25

Both readings today have to do with decisions that touch us in the innermost depths of our being. These are life or death decisions, not so much in a physical sense, but ones that can animate and bless others or have the opposite effect. One decision means following the Lord and his will and way, and the other means taking a direction that leads not to gain but loss.

The Israelites are about to enter the Promised Land. It’s decision time. Who will be their God? Will they commit to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who led them out of slavery and through the desert? The Old Testament narrates how all too often instead of choosing the Lord who gives life, they let death in its many forms come into their lives.

In the Gospel, deciding for Jesus puts one on the road to Jerusalem, the Way of the Cross. But this short-term loss leads to long-term gain: life, and indeed life everlasting.

Lent has just begun. Like the Israelites, we stand before the Promised Land. Like Jesus, we stand on the way to Jerusalem. Once again, it’s decision time. Life or death? How will we decide in the coming 40 days?

Ambas lecturas hoy nos hablan de decisiones que nos tocan en lo más hondo de nuestro ser. Tienen que ver con la vida o la muerte, no tanto en el sentido físico, pero pueden animar y bendecir a otros o tener un efecto opuesto. Pueden tener al Señor como el camino que seguir o nos pueden poner en otro rumbo lejos de él.

Los Israelitas están por entrar en la tierra prometida. Es el tiempo para decidir. ¿Quién será su Dios? ¿Se van a comprometer con el Dios de Abraham, Isaac, y Jacob quien los sacó de la esclavitud en Egipto y los guió por el desierto?

El viejo testamento nos narra como ellos tantas veces no escogieron al Dios de la vida y permitieron que la muerte en sus tantas manifestaciones entrara en sus vidas.

En el evangelio decidir por Jesús era y es ponernos en el camino hacia Jerusalén, el camino de la cruz. Sin embargo, esta pérdida a corto plazo llega a ser una ganancia a largo plazo—la vida y, de hecho, la vida eterna.

La cuaresma acaba de comenzar. Como los Israelitas nos encontramos frente a la tierra prometida. Como Jesús nos encontramos en el camino hacia Jerusalén. Una vez más es el tiempo para decidir. ¿La vida o la muerte? ¿Cómo decidiremos durante los cuarenta días siguientes?
