Meditating on the passion of Christ, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI wrote that although all sinners were the authors of Christ’s passion, “the cross is the overcoming of sin through God’s more powerful love. . . . [T]he blood of Jesus does not cry for punishment but is itself atonement, reconciliation” (Many Religions, One Covenant, Ignatius Press, 1999).
As we continue our Lenten journey, the Gospel today invites us to reflect on the cries of our time. We live in a world in which people are crying for all kinds of reasons, and we are crying with them, but what should we cry for as Christians?
We don’t like to listen to people crying. We can choose to ignore them or even silence them, but when we do, we cry against Christ. We are called to repeat the very cry of love that Christ made on the cross. It is our way to carry our cross after him. Lent this year offers us another opportunity to listen to the cry of truth and of love and to repeat the cry of Christ, which leads to the joy of Easter morning.

Meditando sobre la pasión de Cristo, el papa emérito Benedicto XVI escribió que, aunque todos los pecadores fueron autores de la pasión de Cristo, “la cruz es la superación del pecado a través del poderoso amor de Dios. . . . La sangre de Jesús no llora por el castigo, es en sí misma expiación y reconciliación” (Muchas Religiones, Una Alianza, Ignatius Press, 1999).
Mientras proseguimos nuestro camino cuaresmal, el Evangelio de hoy nos invita a reflexionar sobre los llantos de nuestro tiempo. Vivimos en un mundo donde las personas lloran por todo tipo de razones, y lloramos con ellas, pero como cristianos, ¿cuáles son las razones por las cuales debemos llorar?
No nos gusta oír a la gente llorar. Podemos elegir ignorarlos o incluso silenciarlos pero, cuando lo hacemos, lloramos contra Cristo. Estamos llamados a repetir el mismo llanto del amor que Cristo hizo en la cruz. Es nuestro modo de cargar nuestra cruz tras él. Este año la Cuaresma nos ofrece otra oportunidad de escuchar el llanto de la verdad y el amor, de repetir el llanto de Cristo que conduce a la alegría de la mañana de Pascua.
