Isaiah 42:1-7; Psalm 27; John 12:1-11
As we enter into the solemnity of Holy Week, our Gospel brings us to the home of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. Here Jesus reclines at table to dine with these intimate friends. He is on the threshold of his passion and death, the great paschal mystery which will culminate in the resurrection. In this our redemption is accomplished, and the kingdom of God is made present.
Isaiah tells us that this kingdom is one of justice wherein the blind will be given sight, those who are shackled will be set free, and those who live in darkness will come into the light. As baptized Christians, we are called to the work of the kingdom, but first we learn from Mary the true foundation of our discipleship.
She kneels before Christ, anoints his feet with costly perfume, and dries them with her hair. How beautiful is Mary’s gesture! It is fully human yet embracive of the divine.
In this act of humble adoration, Mary finds herself in loving relationship with Jesus. The house is now filled with the fragrance of the precious oil, and Mary, filled with the fragrance of Christ, is strengthened for the work of holy discipleship.

Al adentrarnos en la solemnidad de la Semana Santa, nuestro Evangelio nos lleva hasta la casa de Marta, María, y Lázaro. Aquí Jesús se sienta a la mesa para cenar con estos amigos íntimos. Está en el umbral de su pasión y muerte, el gran misterio pascual que culminará en la resurrección. En ella, conseguimos nuestra redención, y se nos presenta el reino de Dios.
Isaías nos dice que este reino es un reino de justicia en el que a los ciegos se les dará la vista, los encadenados serán liberados, y los que viven en la oscuridad verán la luz. Como cristianos bautizados, estamos llamados a la obra del reino, pero primero aprendemos de María los verdaderos fundamentos de nuestro discipulado.
Ella se arrodilla ante Cristo, unta sus pies con un caro perfume, y los seca con su pelo. ¡Qué hermoso es el gesto de María! Es totalmente humano pero a la vez divino.
En este acto de humilde adoración, María se encuentra en una relación de amor con Jesús. La fragancia del preciado aceite impregna toda la casa, y María, envuelta por la fragancia de Cristo, es fortalecida por la labor del santo discipulado.
