Scripture readings: Micah 7:14-15, 18-20; Psalm 103; Luke 15:1-3, 11-32
Today’s parable presents sin as ending up in the wrong place. The younger son, demanding his share of the inheritance, ends up in a foreign land, penniless, friendless, swilling slop with the pigs.The elder son, in a prison of long-harbored resentment and anger, ends up outside the celebration of his brother’s return, cutting himself off from both father and brother. Their choices decide their destination.
Jesus came to call everyone home, to bring God’s children to the right place: to His embrace and, through Him, to our loving Father, who waits on our choices.
Micah describes our loving God as “the God who removes guilt and pardons sin . . . who does not persist in anger forever but delights rather in clemency, who will again have compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt, who will cast into the depths of the sea all our sin.”
Where are you? The younger son reminds us that choices can be revised. Lent calls us to choose Christ. Jesus is the light that calls to us and shows us the way home.
