Scripture readings: Leviticus 19:1-2, 11-18; Psalm 19; Matthew 25:31-46
The readings today begin with a statement directly from God: “Be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.” We then hear a general summary of the commandments, which call us to be caring, kind, and concerned for others. The psalm sings the goodness of God’s laws, and in Matthew we hear Jesus’ reminder that “whatever you do for the least, you do for me.”As we ponder today’s texts, we are not being asked to do super-human feats. We are simply asked to look at those around us and to reach out in kindness and justice.
It’s not always easy to love our neighbor. And yet with God’s grace and the gentle reminders of His commandments, it’s possible. We can be holy people. As we begin this season of Lent, may we strive to be missionaries of holiness in all we say, do, and are.
