Scripture readings: Esther C:12, 14-16, 23-25; Psalm 138; Matthew 7:7-12
One of the invitations of this season of renewal is to literally follow the refrain of the ever-popular spiritual “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.” Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are directed toward drawing us closer to God in Jesus through the Holy Spirit.Lent is the celebration of the anniversary of Christ’s death and resurrection—God’s “love explosion” among us! We’re invited not only to get in touch with the memory of Christ and His total outpouring of love but also to get in touch with how we are living that memory. Are we living with such intimacy with God that love informs our very breathing?
Today’s Gospel is perhaps too familiar. It invites us to an intimacy with God similar to that of a beloved child with loving parents but surpassing anything we have ever known. God desires only to give us love. God wants nothing more than for us to truly believe that the only-begotten Son was sent to love us to liberation, wholeness, and healing. God yearns to give not just like any parent, but God yearns to give us love beyond all our wildest dreams.
