Lenten reflection, day 9

Scripture readings: Ezekiel 18:21-28; Psalm 130; Matthew 5:20-26

When we look at the Gospels, we see that Jesus is hardly ever angry. The only thing that makes Him angry is hypocrisy. We see this continually in His discussions with the religious leaders. Many of them are concerned only with appearances. They do not respond to Jesus’ calls to conversion.

Lent is a time for conversion of the heart. Jesus warns His disciples and us: “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.”

Everything we do during this special time—the fasting, the sacrifices, the times of prayer and reflection—is to help us change, to be people who love as Jesus calls us to love. He wants us to be loving, compassionate, humble, and generous, especially with our forgiveness.

During Lent—and maybe during the rest of the year—we can begin each day with a question: How can I love God and my neighbor more today?
