Today and tomorrow, The Rodgers Center at Merrimack College, North Andover, MA, will host the Liguorian Players in The House of Bernarda Alba, directed by Father Lenny Delgado, C.Ss.R.
In February 2005 the Liguorian Players presented Edith Stein at the same venue, and the production was very well received. This year they are offering The House of Bernarda Alba on two consecutive evenings.
This play, considered to be one of Spain’s masterpieces of the modern theatre, explores "…the personal stigma associated with not being married and a woman’s inability to marry the man she loves," according to Federico Garcia Lorca, the play’s author. Theatre Source provides a story summary:
This tragedy is set in a small Spanish village, in which a tyrannical mother decrees after her second husband’s funeral that her five daughters will go into mourning for eight years. As the daughters chafe against this strict control of their lives, all five harbor a love for the village’s most handsome man, Pepe. Although the eldest daughter is engaged to be married to Pepe, it is the youngest one that ends up becoming his lover — a secret that ultimately ends with tragic consequences.
