Redemptorists and thousands around the world celebrated the feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help June 27. In 1866, Pope Pius IX gave the miraculous icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help to the Redemptorists and charged them with making her known throughout the world.
On Friday, I had my turn in the caravan, or the motor homes o utside the church in the parking lot. During the novena, they make a Redemptorist available nearly all day long to anyone who might want to go to confession (even during Mass) or seek spiritual counseling.
Despite the presence over the years of Jesuits, Dominicans, and Franciscans in Limerick, when people speak of "The Fathers" they are only referring to the Redemptorists. As one of the confreres here says, probably the heart of the novena is the reading of the petitions.
Father Robert Hopwood died Thursday morning at the St. John Neumann Residence at Stella Maris in Timonium, MD. He was 84. Father Hopwood was born August 25, 1925, in Oil City, PA. He professed vows as a Redemptorist August 2, 1947, and was ordained to the priesthood June 22, 1952.

Redemptorists have served the people of Lima, Ohio, since 1916. At one time, the rectory at St. Gerard Parish was used as a novitiate residence, where young men discerning the call to join the Redemptorists spent more time in prayer and study before making their first vows.
Redemptorists in Ireland put as much emphasis on Reconciliation as do Redemptorists in the U.S. and elsewhere. Beginning at 6:30 a.m. and ending well into the evening, there are at least five priests available for confessions all day long during the Novena.
On June 11, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated the close of the Year for Priests. Thousands of priests gathered in Rome to mark the end of the year. Redemptorists in the Baltimore Province had their own day of recollection and brotherhood to mark the occasion.
Yesterday, following the 1:10 p.m. Mass, donated helium balloons were brought in and anchored to every pew and on top of each confessional. Pirouetting columns of them flanked the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in the sanctuary.

Friday night I preached at the five evening services: 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. Crowds were enormous and the rector, Father Adrian Egan, was delightfully surprised since the novena doesn’t really “pick up” until after the weekend.
