Less than one month since the Redemptorists launched the first Perpetual Help Novena app for iPhone/iPad, her image and her message have already spanned the globe. More than 120 people have downloaded the nine-day novena since February 4, and they hail from everywhere: United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Brazil, Belgium, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Canada, Philippines, and even the United Arab Emirates.
Redemptorist missionary, Father George Henry Bridge, remembered as the hard-working priest with his own pilot’s license, died on the afternoon of Monday, February 28, 2011 surrounded by his confreres at their religious community in Stella Maris in Timonium, MD.
Redemptoristine Sister Margaret “Peg” Banville died February 21 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Monastery in Esopus, NY, after a long illness. She was 85. A viewing will be held February 23 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the monastery, with a vigil prayer service beginning at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in the monastery chapel.
Despite the cold and snow, the school community at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Brooklyn, NY, turned out in force to celebrate Catholic Schools Week January 30-February 4. The students participated in a variety of ways in a special Mass held in the lower church of the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help .

The ancient icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help is among the most recognized images of Mary in the world. Generations of Catholics grew up attending weekly perpetual novenas that attracted standing-room only crowds.
In a statement released January 18, the Redemptorists announced that they were no longer able to maintain the aging historic buildings of St. Michael’s/St. Patrick’s Parish in East Baltimore. In consultation with the Archdiocese of Baltimore, they developed a plan to close St. Michael’s and create a bi-cultural parish at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Highlandtown, which is also cared for by the Redemptorists.
After 26 years of retreat ministry and more than 75 years as a major seminary, the Redemptorists will close Mount St. Alphonsus Retreat Center on January 1, 2012. The end of ministry at “the Mount” comes as the Redemptorists are reexamining their pastoral commitments in light of the increasing age of their members and the need to continue their primary ministry to the poor and most abandoned.
This week we celebrate the gift of Catholic education that is given to so many children throughout the U.S., including those students in the seven elementary schools and one high school that are part of our Redemptorist parishes.
Several Redemptorist parishes including St. Martin of Tours in Bethpage, NY , Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn , Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Ephrata, PA , and St. Mary’s Parish in Annapolis, MD , sent busloads of parishioners to the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., last week.
